Plant spacing and plant count

Given a bed size and the mature spacing you want between plants, count the rows and plants per row and check the closest two plants really are the spacing you asked for.

Units: Millimetres throughout; the result is a count of plants.

Inputs: Bed width and length (mm), spacing (mm), pattern, optional edge margin (mm).

Method: The usable area is the bed minus twice the edge margin. Rows and columns are the grid points inside that area at the chosen step; offset rows step by spacing × √3 ÷ 2 so diagonal neighbours stay one spacing apart.

Your measurements

All measurements are in millimetres. Spacing is the clear distance you want between mature plants, measured centre to centre.

Across the bed, from the left edge to the right edge.

Unit: millimetres (mm)

Along the bed, from one end to the other.

Unit: millimetres (mm)

Mature spacing between plants, at least 20 mm.

Planting pattern

Square rows align in a grid. Offset rows stagger by half a spacing and fit more plants.

Leave empty to use half the spacing on every edge, so plants stay inside the bed.
